World Suicide Prevention Day
So the globe commemorated the 2021 edition of World Suicide Prevention Day recently
and some of these suicide deaths are related to drug addiction and substance use disorders.
Before I get into the statistics that tie these 2 phenomena together let’s look at some of the suicide rates so far in numbers.
According to the World Health Organization, more than 700,000 people die by suicide each year,
and Every 40 seconds, someone in the world takes their own life.
Suicide is the leading cause of death for people aged 15 to 29 and for every suicide that results in death, there are as many as 40 attempted suicides.
The aim of the day
The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) initiated World Suicide Prevention Day in 2003.
The day was co-sponsored by the World Federation for Mental Health and the World Health Organization.
The aim of the day is to research and collect data on suicidal behavior and determine the various causes
and why its signs go unnoticed and develop sound practices and policies for suicide prevention.
With the objective of increasing awareness about suicidal behaviors and how to effectively prevent them.”
As well as the strengthening of countries’ capabilities to develop and evaluate national policies and plans for suicide prevention.”
Suicide and Drug Addiction
The consequences of drug abuse and addiction are really very severe with some damaging effects and in some cases suicide.
People who are struggling with a mental illness like depression may use drugs to self-medicate, putting them at an increased risk of suicide.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 47,000 people lost their lives to suicide in 2017.
This makes it the 10th-leading cause of death overall in the United States.
- From 2001 to 2017, the suicide rate rose from 10.7 to 14 suicides per 100,000 people, which is a 31% increase.
- Suicide is significantly more common among men, who are almost four times more likely to fall victim to suicide.
- Among both people of all genders, the suicide rate is highest for non-Hispanic American Indian/Alaskan Natives and non-Hispanic Whites.
Suicide and Iboga
Persons with Substance Addiction & Mental Health issues are more exposed to killing themselves
due to the nature of their condition and are advised to seek help to get them through this situation.
With the current situation at hand, there exist so many treatment centers that offer help to these patients
with the use of natural plants like iboga as well as therapy. More on that later on.
Research seeking to understand the link between suicide and opioid use suggests the two may be entangled in multiple ways and for many reasons.
Iboga as a Preventive solution
A 2017 study using national survey data showed that people who misused prescription opioids were 40-60% more likely to have thoughts of suicide,
even after controlling for other health and psychiatric conditions.
People with prescription opioid use disorder were also twice as likely to attempt suicide as individuals who did not misuse prescription opioids.
Ibogaine is one of the most promising psychedelics for addiction which can drastically reduce the suicide rate among people with substance abuse disorder.
What Others Have to Say…
Few people have heard of it, and nobody does it for fun. It’s not pleasant.
It could kill you if taken wrongly. But for extinguishing addiction—and a range of other issues—many people swear there’s nothing like it.
The drug hails from a shrub called Tabernanthe iboga, which is native to Central Africa.
Since at least 1800s, members of the Bwiti religion in Gabon have eaten iboga bark shavings during initiations and coming-of-age ceremonies;
those who consume it report visions of and contact with their ancestors and even God.
The conclusion…
The wider world encountered the hallucinogenic plant in the form of ibogaine, a compound extracted from iboga bark and packed into a pill.
Get rid of things like addiction to the use of ibogaine or any other prescription medication and
why not therapy is vital in the fight against the high rate of suicide deaths amongst those with substance use disorders?
